Turning negativity into positivity

When faced with adversity, we have two choices: we can either continue down a spiral of negativity or we can choose to be proactive.

It’s not easy. Our brains seem to thrive on high level of negativity, they love the hype, speculation and doom stories. We find ourselves wanting to know more, the brain panics and has a desire to be fed information. And news outlets, more often than not, want to produce these stories of panic, fear and anxiety; it’s what sells. We love a good dramatic story. It’s why soaps and dramas are so popular.

It’s like a chance to escape from the world, but if we are not careful we will allow these feelings to drag us down, turning us into zombies, feeding off the news, and we forget what we actually need to be doing to keep ourselves and our businesses healthy.

So, when faced with uncertain times, what can we do?

Firstly, we need to stop focusing on what we CAN’T do and start focusing on what we CAN.

We need to catch hose negative thoughts early and send them away. Start asking yourself questions; rather than focusing on the problems, what are the solutions?

Actively ask your brain to provide you with a list of possible outcomes, such as, “What can I do?”, “How can I deal with this differently?” and “What else can I do?”

When you find yourself forming chains of negative thinking, STOP and close your eyes. Reset. Get focused. Think about what you CAN do, and do it.

There’s not point focusing on the things you can’t do anything about, because if a problem cannot be solved, why spend energy or time worrying about it?

There are always opportunities, and, as entrepreneurs, it’s our job to provide them to people, even if that means having to change the way we do things. There is always another way.

So, start focusing on the things you CAN do.
